This 12-week programme, presented on an interactive website based in the UK, has been popular with men since it was launched in 2002. It is founded on the principle that men who want to lose weight also want to remain in control, and make their changes in private and on their own time rather than attending group classes or seeing a nutritionist.
How the Fatmanslim diet claims to work
Dr Ian W Campbell, the author, wanted to reach those men whom he knew needed help to lose weight but who were likely to be reluctant to attend his medical clinics or a weight-loss group. The fat that accumulates around a man's waist is, medically speaking, the most dangerous, so the plan focuses on reducing girth size - calling itself a “waist-loss programme”. The principle of the plan is long-term lifestyle change.
The Fatmanslim regimen
An assessment of motivation and long-held habits is followed by a balanced, nutritious diet that encourages eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and reducing fat intake. Absolutely nothing is forbidden, because Dr Campbell recognizes this as a quick way to lose a slimmer's new-found commitment. Daily exercise, which is a major element of the programme, is introduced gradually over the 12 weeks. All forms of physical activity are encouraged, and practical tips on how to increase exercise at a safe rate are given.
Written by men, for men, fatmanslim is direct and practical - and humorous. The medical benefits of modest but sustained weight - and waist - loss are explained, and new techniques are explored to enable a man to find the drive and determination for life-long changes. The programme incorporates medical, psychological, social, and practical information to help.
The website allows for direct access to Dr Campbell's advice, and provides an interactive forum for members to discuss issues and gain support from other men on the programme. The weight-loss principles are traditional, and suitable for the whole family, but the style of delivery makes it ideal for men who want to lose weight at their own pace, and keep it off long-term.
Is the Fatmanslim diet healthy?
The benefits of eating a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, while low in fats and sugars, are well proved. The diet is balanced and nutritionally sound and will most likely promote weight loss. The added benefits of incorporating extra physical activity into the daily routine include a reduction in the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, as well as an increase in self-esteem and energy level, and an overall feeling of well-being.
