This extremely low-calorie diet should be followed for only seven days at a time. It is not nutritionally sound nor is it a safe way to lose weight.
How the Cabbage soup diet claims to work
The authors of the diet claim that you can lose 4.5-6.8kg (10-15lb) by eating as much cabbage soup as you want to for seven days. The cabbage soup includes a variety of low-calorie vegetables with canned tomatoes, flavoured onion soup mix, and stock or vegetable juice.
The Cabbage soup diet regimen
In addition to eating unlimited amounts of home-made cabbage soup, this plan allows combinations of foods each day, such as fruit and milk one day, vegetables and milk the next day, and beef on the following day. No bread, alcohol, or fizzy drinks are allowed.
Recipe: cabbage soup
- 6 large onions, chopped
- 2 green peppers, seeded and chopped
- 2 cans (400g/14oz each) tomatoes
- 1 bunch celery, chopped
- ½ cabbage, chopped
- 1 packet dry onion soup mix
- 1-2 stock cubes (optional)
- 3 litres (5 ¼ pints) vegetable juice with 1 litre (1 ¾ pints) of water, or just use 3 litres (5 ¼ pints) of water.
Soften the onions and peppers, then add the other vegetables. Add the soup mix, stock cubes, and liquid. Bring to the boil, then simmer for up to 2 hours. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and your choice of chopped parsley or curry powder.
Is the Cabbage soup diet healthy?
The diet offers quick weight loss, most of which is water weight. It is neither nutritionally balanced nor a safe method for achieving long-term weight reduction and is likely to promote cravings as soon as you come off the diet. If you do decide to try it, be sure to eat sensible, well-balanced meals once you have completed the seven days.
